Companion Vegetable Planting
Companion Vegetables:
Vegetables will grow better if you follow a few Companion Planting principles. Some Vegetables grow well together and some just aren’t nice neighbours. Good Companions grow in harmony with each other helping to deter pests and not competing for the same nutrients.
Mono-culture regimes mean one type of plant is grown in the same area all requiring the same nutrients, all susceptible to the same pests. Different plants require different levels of particular nutrients, if you mass plant one variety then there will be a lot of completion for one nutrient, quickly starving the soil of that nutrient.
Mass plantings are more prone to pest attack because it is easy for Insects to find the crop when they are all concentrated in one area. Vegetables interplanted with Herbs, Flowers and other Vegetables produce stronger plants, higher yields and minimal pest pressures.
Below is a list of the more Common Vegetables and their good Companions along with Vegetables to avoid.
Asparagus:
Tomatoes, avoid Garlic, Onion, Potato.
Brassica:
Onions, Garlic, Shallots, avoid Tomato, Peppers.
Beans:
Brassica, Carrot, Corn, Cucumber, Radish, avoid Peppers, Tomato. Beans fix Nitrogen into the soil, benefiting the following crop.
Carrots:
Lettuce, Tomato, avoid Radish, Parsnip.
Corn:
Beans, Cucurbits, Peas, Potato, Sunflower, avoid Tomato Leek.
Cucurbits: (Cucumber etc)
Carrot, Peas, Radish, Sunflower, avoid Tomato.
Eggplant:
Beans, Mints, Peppers.
Lettuce:
Beans, Carrot, Radish, avoid Cabbage, Celery, Parsley.
Onion:
Cabbage, Carrot, Tomato, avoid Bean, Parsley, Peas.
Peppers:

Potato:
Horseradish, Cabbage, avoid Carrot, Cucumber, Sunflower, Tomato.
Pumpkin:
Beans, Corn, Radish.
Tomato:
Asparagus, Celery, Onion, Peppers, avoid Brassica, Corn, Peas, Potato.
Some of my favourite Companions are Tomatoes interplanted with Peppers and Marigolds, pests are never a problem and some of the best crops of Peppers I have grown had Tomatoes for neighbours.
Potatoes and Cabbage are another, I plant the Cabbage on the edge of the Potato hill, the two are harvested at about the same time.
Be Happy,
Barry.

I want to fertilise my desert roses, what brand fertiliser do I use?😊
For long term residual control use regular liquid fish fertiliser as a foliar spray, another method if your plant is an ornamental is a soil drench with Neem Oil. Cheers, Barry
Christina, I find the best preventative is regular liquid fish fertilizer or if your plant is an ornamental a soil drench with Neem Oil is a great long term residual method. Cheers, Barry
Hi Christina, There are two ways of getting rid of the carcasses, wipe them off with either a damp cloth or paper towel or just wash them off with your garden hose. Cheers Barry
