Organic Tomato Growing
Organic Tomato Growing:
Tomatoes are a really rewarding crop to grow but Organic Tomato growing is even more rewarding as the taste and yields can be extra special.
Bragging rights that go with a bountiful crop of Tomatoes are second to none, big juicy Tomatoes are the average Gardeners prize crop.
When you grow an Organic Tomato it is less prone to Pest and Disease attack as the Natural Fertiliser and Additives that feed the plant and soil keep the plant in pristine condition.
Poor soils aren't an issue if good quality Compost and Organic Fertiliser are used in copious quantities.
Organic Amendments change the structure of the soil creating conditions that encourage a large prosperous root system that mines the soil for Nutrients and Moisture.
Once the soil is fixed then regular applications of Liquid Fish Fertiliser to the point of runoff help to keep the leaves healthy and also keeps the Pests away by leaving behind a film of Oil that deters Insects from settling.
Other Foliar Fertilisers well worth using are Molasses (5mls/L) and Seaweed, both feed the leaves and have the "magic" Pest Deterrent effect, spraying to run off also helps the soil by feeding it with the excess.
Use Foliar Fertilisers at least fortnightly, weekly when the plant is fruiting.
Some feeding of the soil during the growth cycle is advisable; Skim Milk Powder is an excellent choice as is contains Proteins and Carbohydrates that feed the soil microbial life that in turn helps the Tomatoes roots to mine the soil for Vital Nutrients.
Just sprinkle half a cup of the Skim Milk Powder around the base of the plant every two-three weeks and water in.
If the plant starts to struggle at any stage then a good feed of Liquid Organic Fertiliser preferably Fish Fertiliser will give them a pick me up.
Below is the step by step regime to a successful crop of Organic Tomatoes.
1; Dig a large hole to give the roots a good area to grow into.
2; Place one Kilo of Organic Fertiliser into the Hole (Pelletised Chicken Fertiliser here), the roots will hit this about flowering time.
3; Fill the Hole with good quality Compost/Mulch which creates the perfect situation for an expansive root system.
4; Plant the Tomato and add the first lot of Skim Milk Powder.
5; A couple of months later you have a Healthy Bountiful Tomato plant.
Enjoy,
Barry.

For long term residual control use regular liquid fish fertiliser as a foliar spray, another method if your plant is an ornamental is a soil drench with Neem Oil. Cheers, Barry

Hi Christina, There are two ways of getting rid of the carcasses, wipe them off with either a damp cloth or paper towel or just wash them off with your garden hose. Cheers Barry
