Home Remedies for Day to Day Use
Home Remedies.
Once upon a time, there were no drugs no chemicals no pills and potions to get from the Supermarket or Chemist. You had to rely on good old home remedies to fix those day to day issues you en-counted. Below is a list of such remedies that grandma would have used and probably still does, many are actually coming back in favour as our reliance on chemical solutions starts to show signs that they are just masking the problem rather than remedying it.
Baking Soda:
Drink a glass of water with half a teaspoon of baking soda in it daily to help keep your bodies natural P H right. Our unhealthy diet and over-consumption of processed foods lower the PH leading to a lot of sicknesses and general ill health. Cancer, for instance, has an extremely low PH and there are now some success cases in treating cancer with raising the bodies PH to higher levels which creates a situation not conducive to cancer growth.
Sunburn relief,
Put half a cup of baking soda in a bath and have a good soak, when you get out to allow the water to dry naturally don't towel off.
Fungicide,
Baking Soda is a great fungicide as I have eluded to in the Organic Fungicide page on this site. It works just as well on Human fungal problems, simply use in your bath to remedy many an aliment including Thrush.
Deodorant,
Make up a solution of baking soda and water and smear under your arms, it a great natural deodorant, again allow it to dry naturally. Deodorise your shoes with a teaspoon of powder sprinkled in your shoes overnight. Sprinkle onto your carpet and leave for 15 or so minutes and then vacuum out to deodorise.
Insect bites,
Make up a paste in water and apply to the sting, this will give almost instant relief from that nasty itching.
Detox,
Add a cup of baking soda with a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath and then soak away. This is a great detox bath, add a cup of Epsom salts as well if you have a hangover!
Clean a blocked drain with a cup of baking soda washed down with apple cider vinegar, let it bubble away for a few minutes then rinse with hot water.
It's a great fabric softener, add a cup to your washing load for fluffy clothes.
Use it to scrub your barbeque.
Lemons:
Detox,
Lemon juice is a great anti-oxidant and contains absolutely no calories. Put a slice in a glass of water and sip after a meal to cleanse the palette and help wash away excess fat in the meal. The drink will also help with bad breath and keep your gums healthy.
Deodorizer,
Squeeze some lemon juice onto a cotton ball or similar and place in the fridge, it will remove any nasty smells that may be lurking. Place a lemon slice and or peel in the bottom of your rubbish tin to stop any off smells. To deodorise a room simply cut a lemon in half and leave in the room for a day, the results are amazing.
Skin Blemishes,
Dab lemon juice directly onto pimples and blackheads, let it soak in for a few minutes then clean off, repeat daily until the desired result is achieved. Use on stings etc to soothe and relieve discomfort.
The Laundry,
Scrub into stains on your clothes before putting in the washing machine. Pour a cup of lemon juice into the washing machine during the wash cycle for a more powerful clean and extra fresh smelling clothes.
White Vinegar:
Cleaning,
Make sure you use distilled vinegar.
Place a bowl of White Vinegar in your microwave and bring to the boil, the steam will loosen any food on the walls for easy cleaning and deodorize as well.
Use a half water half vinegar solution to wipe down dirty shelves in your fridge, this brew can be used for most cleaning situation.
Add some table salt to the above mix to scrub soap scum off faucets and hand basins.
Use undiluted on mould and mildew, also kills bacteria and germs.
Pest Control,
Spray undiluted on ant trails and around your door and window frames to stop crawling insects invading, you will need to repeat regularly.
Eucalyptus:
Cleaning,
Eucalyptus Oil can be purchased in various strengths, generally speaking, a 10% solution is sufficient for most cleaning situations. I use Bisoto's an Australian aerosol form of Eucalyptus to clean and disinfect all household surfaces including getting rid of the stubborn stain on your oven top. Great for disinfecting the toilet.
Pest Control,
Same as White Vinegar spray liberally on any ant or crawling insect trails.
Eucalyptus is a great insecticide when sprayed directly onto the pest.
I spray this lightly on my skin to keep mozzies away. The smell can be a little offensive initially but passes quickly.
Personal Use
Rub Eucalyptus into sore and tired muscles for almost instant relief.
Spray onto Insect bites, scratches and grazes to relieve the inching and give an antiseptic result.
Lavender:
Cleaning
Lavender is a great bacteriacide which makes it excellent for disinfecting surfaces around the home, just spray a 3% solution onto benchtops etc for a sterile clean.
Pest Control
As per Eucalyptus, however, the aroma is a little sweeter.
Personel Use
As per Eucalyptus for sores, insect bites and minor scratches.
Be Happy,
Barry

For long term residual control use regular liquid fish fertiliser as a foliar spray, another method if your plant is an ornamental is a soil drench with Neem Oil. Cheers, Barry
